90 Degrees and Worth Every Step

Hey gang,

We just closed out a full stretch of summer around here.

Swim season wrapped with the kids at the City Meet over at Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center — all those early-morning chlorine hours finally cashing in — and my mom came to town for a good visit.

And when I look back at these last couple of weeks, the days that actually stood out weren't the ones that just… happened. They were the ones I built with intention.

It wasn't my mom's longest trip — but I savored every hour of it. We hung out. We binged a slightly shameful amount of Netflix. We even walked together to and from the meet pool in 90-plus-degree heat, and honestly? I loved every sweaty minute. Because I went in having blocked those days on purpose. Not "I'll catch her around the edges," but real, protected time. And it paid off in a way the leftover-margins version never would have.

Same story with my writing. Lately I've been sneaking off to one particular coffee shop — my little magic spot — and something about the context shift breaks the spell. My teaching brain doesn't follow me there. For the first time in a while, I've had this joyful, unbroken focus on the work I most want to be making.

Here's what gets me: none of it was extra time. It was the same hours I always have. The only difference is that I spent them with intention.

That's the whole thing, isn't it?

The gap between a week that's busy and a week that's building usually isn't how much time we've got. It's whether we lived it with any intention — or just let it happen to us.

So, honest question: what would you block this fall, if you truly believed it'd pay off like that?

The morning pages. The album. The coffee-shop hours. A few unhurried days with someone you love.

That's exactly what we're doing this week on Friday.

Design Your Creative Life is a free, 90-minute live webinar where we'll look honestly at where your time actually goes — and design a few of those intentional blocks together, for the creative work and the life around it.

P.S. — The Netflix binge with my mom is going straight in the "worth it" column, no notes. Some blocks are for making things. Some are just for being with the people you'd regret rushing past.

Not this time?

That's completely ok. Click here and I'll skip you for the rest of this workshop series while keeping you subscribed to Studio AB Dispatch. I want every email from Studio AB to be worth opening.
